Outside In
In a rustic-contemporary two-story home, an isolated kitchen lacked natural light and connectivity, featuring only one window, one exterior door, and a single interior opening to the dining area. Blending the new finishes with the homes dominate color palette and a generous amount of architectural salvage items and antiques were a priority. The goal was to revitalize this dated space into a highly functional kitchen, provide a view of the outdoors, and elevate the overall aesthetic and practicality of the space. The new kitchen serves as a gathering point, creating an inviting atmosphere for shared moments and culinary delights.

Somerset
The Cooking Hearth is enveloped in beveled Black oak paneling, encompassing a 60” range, microwave, and convection steam oven. Its counterpart, the Cleanup/Prep Island, boasts a workstation-style sink, dishwasher, and trash cabinet. A raised dining table-cum-island seats five while also housing a warming drawer. The Pantry wall was framed in with pocket doors.
The tall Hutch Island bridges the divide between the Kitchen and Living Room, offering both Butler pantry storage and a Refreshment Bar. Glass front cabinets with metal doors and frosted glass inserts mirror the door and window styles throughout the house.
Materials and finishes were chosen to create synergy between rustic elements and modern aesthetics. The Rift White Oak cabinetry, in a “Malt” stain and contrasting matte black paint, lends a contemporary edge. Simply White ceiling and walls allow the design elements to dominate. The countertops use both Dumont Quartzite and honed Absolute Black Granite.

Casual Contrast
The contrast of dark and white sets the tone for a fusion of distinct elements in this eclectic kitchen. The white perimeter delivers a neutral backdrop, quietly accentuated by the glimmer of a full-height shingle-pattern textured backplash tile. The dark gray double islands crisply contrast with the white perimeter and calacatta-style quartz tops. The brushed pewter hood lined with brass strapping catches the eye as the main focal point. Brass elements are also included on the facuet, cabinet pulls, wall sconces, pendants, and brass caps on the island posts.

Industrial Farmhouse
Two blackened walnut islands invigorate this white industrial-style kitchen. Soft gray quartz coutertops and full height backsplashes provide a lustrous yet durable surface element. The original knotty pine coffered ceiling was re-trimmed with clean-lined cove moldings and painted a bright white to match the cabinetry. Framed lantern-style pendants complete the industrial farmhouse look.

Gray Sophistication
Natural walnut lends warmth and variation to this gray kitchen, crowned with soft Danby marble countertops. A bookmatched full-height backsplash highlights the brass-accented range as a focal point. Lighted wall cabinets feature natural walnut interiors and brass-edged shelves. Brass elements dominate the hardware, range knobs, plumbing and lighting fixutres.

Culinary Dream
Four doorways and multiple windows offered a design challenge to making this kitchen functional for a cooking enthusiast. Double islands were designed to create an aisle that opens directly in front of the refrigerator and ovens for convenient access. The sink was placed on the larger island to be easily accessible from all areas. A lowered seating area attached to the island can double for entertaining or prep space. The adjacent bar, in the same walnut and stainless as the kitchen, is placed conveniently on the cusp of both kitchen and family room.
Two glass-front wall cabinets frame the focal wall, displaying everyday items for use at a glance. Glossy white picket tile lines both the wall and the backs of the wall cabinets, creating the illusion of a backless cabinet. The hood combines a warm silver bronze with brushed stainless banding that blends the appliance and cabinetry finishes. The other end of the elongated kitchen is lined with plenty of tall pantry storage. The dark stained walnut cabinetry is balanced with light quartzite countertops, a light gray wall color, and plenty of natural light.
