The columns in this kitchen support a former exterior wall and incorporate a sense of openness.  A very large island became an anchor to facilitate traffic flow, maximize function, and take advantage of the light and view provided by the wall of French doors opening to the pool area.  A soffit above outlines the general island footprint, tying the room together by using molding from the cabinetry, pendants in the same style as the dining room, and the antiqued faux finish used on the columns and the range hood.  Amid the plethora of antique finishes, a splash of modern glass mosaic backsplash tile refreshes the kitchen, while the understated earth tones make the tile blend seamlessly with its more traditional surroundings.
